Haiti by Air

Spectacular and life-saving news!  WaterIsLife.com is sending over 6500 filters to Port Au Prince, Haiti!  Thank you to the thousands of donors that are helping to bring clean water to those in need.  So many organizations, schools, churches and business have worked together to raise the funds so that others may have clean water today!

We know that by rapidly getting the www.WaterIsLife.com water filters into the hands of thousands in need, we can drastically help the area, and provide them with clean life-saving water until internal infrastructure and pumps can be repaired.  Prior to the earthquake, clean water was a huge issue for many Haitians, and with the aftermath just about to begin, the lack of clean water will become life-threatening to all there.

Please continue to support www.WaterIsLife.com Water for Haiti and visit http://waterislife.com/donate/ to fund a water filter for a Haitian child in need of clean water today.

Over 100 WaterIsLife.com water filters were distributed last week in the Village of Kurivohoyili, in the Tolon Kumbungo District in Northern Ghana.

These are the Dagomba people and they speak Dagbani language.  The chief of the village is Chief Braima Napari, and the Woman Leader we visited with is Alima Iddrisu.

There is no school in the village, but approx. 30 of the 150 children attend a neighboring village school. This village accesses water from a damed area, and the women and children haul water 3x-6x per day.  The water is contaminated due to cattle and other animals sharing the water source.

The village is excited to receive additional filters, and we are working to help create long-term clean water solutions, as well as provide health and hygiene assistance to Kurivohoyili.

All of the filters delivered had personal messages written on them.  Below are photos of filters donated by the Hayslett and Simmons families.  Each family composed a simple message on the filters, and they were hand delivered to children in this village.  It’s fantastic to know that your donations are in action and saving lives today!

WaterIsLife.com field team visited Ghana to research 230 villages in need of clean water in the Tolon Kumbungu District of Northern Ghana.  Organized by Iddrisu Abdul-Aziz Boare (below left), WaterIsLife.com Program Coordinator-Ghana, the team was warmly greeted by the District Chief Iddi Manza, and his staff.  The Tolon Kumbungu District offers primary schools, two secondary schools, a police station, clinic and maternal health clinic.  The team visited eight villages to learn of their water needs, and how WaterIsLife.com could make an impact to transform these communities in the Northern District.

With additional help from Abdulai Lansah (above R), District Guinea Worm Coordinator, and many others,  the village visits were extremely successful in capturing data and information on the areas water crisis, and how WIL can provide assistance.

Santu Paringini - Namdu Village

The team was able to meet with each village Chief, their Elders, as well as spend time with the community women leaders. In each village time was spent time at the water sources, understanding the water needs, discussing long term solutions and health and hygiene concerns.

WaterIslife.com will partner with many to supply personal water filters, help provide a long-term clean water solution and share health and hygiene support to each of these villages.  Once these basic needs are met, children can go to school, lead healthier lives – which will ultimately these transform communities.

Thank you to District Chief, Iddi-Manza, the District Director and their staff for their gracious welcome, and we look forward to working closely to help many villages obtain clean water and raise healthy children.

The WaterIsLife.com Team participated in the Women’s Conference 2009 in Long Beach!  Over the two days, more than 20,000 women gathered to share unique journeys with a powerful community of women and be united under one theme – Be Who You Are…An Architect of Change.

Womens Conference Oct 09 (23)

WaterIsLife.com sponsored a booth at the Night at the Village which sold out with over 10,000 attendees.  The Village really was the place to be as women had a chance to meet and mix and mingle with – and be inspired by – world class speakers, best selling authors, chefs and true Architects of Change.

In the opening ceremonies Maria Shriver said “Women should learn to trust ourselves and have confidence – self trust, an idea whose time has come.”

WaterIsLife.com made amazing connections with so many Architects of Change, and discussed partnerships with many organizations and individuals wanting to help children obtain clean water around the world.  One of the cool moments of the conference was a chance to talk with Dr. Jane Goodall. “Every individual counts.  Every individual has a role to play.  Every individual makes a difference.”

Premal Shah, Founder of kiva.org shared his insight into starting the organization which provides micro-loans to low-income entrepreneurs.  He said, “dont’ seek to be validated, don’t ask for permission or approval, just get started!  What great advice Premal!  Get involved, be an Architect of Change, and help bring clean water to children around the world!

We have covered many miles, and without incident.  Not even a cold!  Unless you call the following gufaws, incidents;

- Entire bottle of Olive Oil spills in RV during curvy road trekking,  Chocolate syrup spills in refrigerator treating each item in fridge to a delightful topping,  Pulling into a backwoods driveway for overnight with rig, and no way out,  Spending entire day snaking backed up sewer at Mother’s house,  Losing parking lot where our vehicle was in Boston – that street, no…that street?  No.  Catalytic converter on last leg, but we managed.

So many more small humorous things as with any trip or adventure, but we were blessed with a safe, and problem free journey.

The journey from the East Coast to arid Arizona was a highway of diversity.  All were excited to hit the Desert Terrain, and AZ state border.  We are happy to be home with friends and family, and looking forward to our next adventure to bring clean water to those without.

        CBS Interview with Liv!

As we head west, across the flat open range, dotted with mesa’s reflecting the early morning sunshine, we quietly reflect on the 40-day journey.

With the presentations and meetings on the Coast 2 Coast Journey finished, I feel a sense of urgency – get home and move forward on building WaterIsLife.com with the rest of the team.  Bring water to the kids in Kenya, in Haiti, in Honduras, in so many other areas of the world.   I am not a politician, not a preacher not an activist, not a social entrepreneur.  I am but one person, with an amazing family that wants this suffering to end.  Water is a basic need, one that we all have a right to.

With the amount of money used in so many areas of our lives and world, it is challenging to understand how and why we can’t solve this crisis.  Bring water to those dying – strategize, collaborate, focus our efforts and solve.  It’s we in the United States do best.

During our travels, we were astounded at the amount of people that want to help solve the crisis.

We must collaborate and work together – schools, churches, civic organizations, corporations, small businesses, other water organizations and non-profits – and begin to make a dent in the daunting statistics that surround us.

WaterIsLife.com has achieved the first step of their first year goal – to bring filters to Haruma, a slum just outside of Nairobi.  We must continue to work hard to meet the rest of the goal to bring filters to the next two villages in Kenya.  They are in desperate need of clean water.  Please think… How Can You Help?

As the girls reflect, their single focus is getting home!  I have not, in all of our 40 days, seen the girls rise and shine early with such enthusiasm! They led the morning chores, prepared trailer for driving and sat in the truck waiting to go!  They are anxious to see their friends at school and swim and returning to their comfy bed – and a refrigerator that doesn’t throw things at you when you open it!

Our visit to Sycamore School was fantastic!   200 passionate kids was an inspiration! They had so many questions and were truly understanding of the crisis and the solutions.  The school’s community service group OHANA, is planning to spearhead a project to fund water filters, and a few of the students are even hoping to make the trip to Africa to distribute the filters!

Our meeting with State Senator Tom Kennedy was yet another moment of irony during our trip. The irony is that State Senator Tom Kennedy, who I had an appointment with,  is the Chairman of the Committee for the bill to replace Senator Edward Kennedy’s seat.  Due to the now open Senate seat for Mass.,

I was not confident that I would make it in to his office. While waiting, I spent time talking with his wonderful staff, and meeting others that were waiting to see the Senator.  The press were anxious to talk with the Senator as petitions had just been delivered to the State House, and they were anxious to get his statement.

Over the weekend the Senator was attending a wedding on the Cape and had discussed the upcoming WaterIsLife.com appointment with a family friend.  Super Capers dvdrip This friend went to high school with our friend Tarah Woods, through which this connection was made.

Long story short, the Senator thought that I was an organization coming in as Lobbyist for a water company.  He was pleasantly surprised to find out I was there to talk with him about WaterIsLife.com and discuss solutions.  He promised to find a way to help.

We talked for quite a long time and then he offered to have Josh, one of his staffers take a picture.  He also shared a story of a personal friend who has completed water wells in Africa. River Queen movie download

At the conclusion of our meeting, he asked his staff to arrange a tour of the State Building for us, and then to call him when we arrived at the Senate Chamber, as he would like to come up to have an official photo taken in the Chamber, and bring us out on the balcony over looking Boston Commons, one of his favorite places.

The Senator has served the State of Mass in the State Building for over 26 years.  He shared stories with us about the history of Boston Commons, and shared a personal story about Caroline Kennedy as they both sat on the Committee to create the JFK memorial statue at the State building.

The Senator took time to meet with the WaterIsLife.com team, get to know each of us, and talk about the water crisis – all on a day that was filled with pressing matters for the Chairman of the Committee to fill Sen. Edward Kennedy’s seat.  An important issue for our Country.

          That’s respectable, dignified and amazing.

Due to the long day at the Mass State Building, our trip to Cambridge was abbreviated. No time for an aggressive street team, but we were able to visit Harvard Medical School, saw the Business school and enjoyed the Charles River.

Alas, in the spirit of bipartisanship, we head from the Democratic State of Mass. to Kennebunk, Maine.

We are almost to our Coast 2 Coast goal – and will make our flip turn after a presentation at MeritusU in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

New England has been quite an experience, one with political significance for the Coast 2 Coast Team, one I am guessing our daughters will pass down to the next generation.

The thrill was the office energy.  I had the chance to talk with a few of the staff members and see how change can happen with dedication, perseverance and an amazing group of people with fantastic ideas and motivation – all working collaboratively for a cause.

Our NYC agenda also included an early morning to hang out at the TODAY Show Plaza.  With WaterIsLife.com banner in hand, a few trains and a taxi we made it to the line to enter the Plaza early enough to score a prime location.  We were pleased that we chose Thursday as our targeted day as we steered clear of Friday due to the Concerts.  Good planning on our part – Miley Cyrus was the concert on Friday and the line of camped out kids had already formed on Thursday morning to enter the plaza Friday.

While in line, staff answered questions, sold poster board and sharpies for $3, and offered a free breakfast to all in line.  They let us in at 6:40 a.m., checked all bags and read all signs.

Nervous moment, our Team was stopped and told “no signs with .com.”

With a few smiles, and kind words, they let us in.  We grabbed a front row spot located near Dean and Deluca – this process has a definite strategy behind it.

The crowd became friendly with one another, and camaraderie was formed by the end of the morning.  Throughout our day in the City, we would run into other Plaza goers with smiles and greetings.  We talked with many on the Plaza about WaterIsLife.com and all were excited for us and helped position our banner.  It was a blustery day, but in the end WaterIsLife.com team hit the trifecta.

Hoda walked passed us with a smile on her way to the studio – that was a fun warm up to our morning.   We watched on screens provided as the Anchors chatted, read, had makeup touch ups, adjusted and blew their noses.   As the show was underway, Matt Lauer, Anne Curry, Natalie and Al came out to the Plaza.  State’s Evidence film They were extremely friendly, and went out of their way to talk with everyone.  The entire process was wonderfully warm and genuine. One of the segments outside on the Plaza was Martha Stewart.  She did a mosaic segment with Anne, Matt and Al.  For those that have known me over the last two decades – I am a Martha fan!  I was no more than 20 feet from her, and was on camera during her segment.  If hat’s my fifteen minutes, I’ll take it.

Al came over to our area and did a weather promo in front of WaterIsLife.com sign.  The Coast 2 Coast Team made it on air.  Our goal complete.

          Friendship Meeting

We were invited to present WaterIsLife.com at a Quaker Friendship Meeting in Plymouth Meeting, PA.  The Quakers use the word Meeting as many would us the word church. Peaceful Warrior video   Quaker Meetings are all over the Philadelphia area – each township, city or burrow may have it’s own Friendship Meeting.  In most cases the Meetings are very old buildings made of stone with sparce interiors.  The Plymouth Meeting House was built in 1709 and was later used by George Washington during the war as a hospital supporting Valley Forge.  The town is quaint consisting of very old buildings and homes, and one can feel the Quaker influence and presence.

We were welcomed by friends, and invited into the Meeting House.  It was very simple interior and smelt strongly of must (is that a word) and old wood.  The Meetings for Worship are based on the principle of silent, direct communication with God, with no pastor, music or order of service.  The Meeting House and all its arrangements have been kept quite plain so that the worshipper will not be distracted from the main purpose of the service.

As the group settles into reverent silence for one hour, we sit in meditation and prayer.  As the Quakers describe, this was an opportunity to take stock in our lives, review our hopes and aspirations, consider each for himself whether the things accomplished during the week represent real value and worthy contribution.

Although the Meeting for Worship is based on silence, all are free to speak, and from time to time, some may feel a call to rise and share their thoughts with the group. Charlotte’s Web movie   One older, stately woman stood up and told a story of a young women who attended Wellesley during the time of the Atomic bomb.

As we sat on the original benches, facing others, we enjoyed the silence and smells of the meeting. The doors and windows were all open, a slight breeze cut through the humidity and symphony of Cicadas.

After the hour of silence, the Meeting is closed when those on the facing benches shake hands.

Take note, if we return to another Quaker Meeting, I will plan to choose a bench where one does not sit directly in front of the slowly ticking clock…tick…tick..tick.

          tick...tick...tick

We then shared a potluck with all, and presented the WaterIsLife.com story.  So many at the meeting took WaterIsLife.com materials so that they could organize their own presentations, at their work and in their communities.  By chance, kismet, serendipity, whatever you wish to call it, a woman from the community – not a Quaker – had heard about our visit to the Meeting. She brought a friend and arrived late during the presentation.  During questions her friend stood up and said he was from Kenya, his family is in Kisumu and deeply thanked our team, and all those at the meeting for caring for his people.  He believes that due to the government disconnection with the people – the best way to help the Africans is to develop these grass root assistance programs.  He believes they are the most effective.  Encouraging!

We have already been in touch via email, and he will be valuable partner with WaterIslife.com as we develop, specifically in filter distribution.

The Quaker movement in our modern times is intriguing, but seemed confusing.  With more research and discussion, I am sure we could grasp the concept and reason so many are still dedicated the Quaker beliefs and attitudes.

For now, it was a moment on our journey that we will all reflect on for a long time.  If there were a way to capture the smell, the sight, the sound of silence, it would truly still not be as remarkable as we will remember.

To know that Quakers are so willing to help children in Africa today, helps reinforce that all walks of life in our global community want to reach out in our small world to assist others.  Now we just need to gather together, and get it done!

Yous know we tasted Philly; Independence Hall, Liberty Bell, South Street, The Crew Boathouses, and of course, Philly Cheese Steaks.  FYI, they also make a Philly Chicken Cheese Steak or just veggies – whodathunk they would be so accommodating!

Thank you to Sally and Paige, as well as all the others that helped make our trip to Philadelphia successful!

With many highlights – and ones that so many others have experienced before us – spending time with Luke Holland from Senator Inhofe’s office was pinnacle.  He took us on a private tour of the Capitol Building, including a ride in the tram which transports Senators from the Russell Senate offices underground to the Capitol Building.  There is a digital clock placed near the tram so that the Senators know how many minutes they have remaining to cast their vote, as each vote is only open for 15 minutes.  The Building was a humbling experience, and makes one reflect on what each of us are doing as citizens to help –  are we making history in our own lives and communities.

Mark, the girls and I enjoyed talking with Senator Inhofe’s wonderful staff, and stopped in to say hi to staffers in John McCain’s office (they are not even from AZ!).  We met Patrick in Senator Edward Kennedy’s office – his parents are friends with Senator Tom Kennedy, who we will meet to share the WaterIsLife.com story in Boston.

Throughout our few day visit in D.C, we were able to take in the Library of Congress, Supreme Court, The National Mall, Washington and Lincoln Memorials, International Trade Center, Smithsonian, Blair House, White House  and Veteran’s Memorial.

We felt pride in our Country and its progress, and the girls realized more than ever the significance of those that founded and fought for our nation, but the ever present thought was the amount work yet to be done.

The Coast 2 Coast Team spent the day in D.C.  Blindly, I took D.C.’s trusty public transportation system  - the bus and then Metro in for 8:00 a.m. meeting at the Russell Senate Office Building.  Many of you know about my compulsion to be on time – I won’t even tell you what time I was up in the RV blow drying my hair!

The commute was successful and I headed up the hill.  At first glimpse, the Capitol Building is breathtaking and expansive.

The country’s heartbeat is felt the moment you step from the Metro.  A few blocks from Union Station, on Delaware Street, two Air Force One helicopters flew overhead and circled, I am assuming they disappeared to land on the lawn of our White House…good Morning DC!

For me, the actual walk up The Hill was a moving moment.  I was alone, it was early, there were not many out and about as Congress is in recess, and I had a mission to share the WaterIsLife.com story with all that would listen.  I felt full and determined.

The Russell Senate Offices were quiet.  I roamed the halls, in awe of the powerful and dedicated people that come to work here each day.  My appointment was with a wickedly smart group of Senate Staffers who have a keen interest in African issues.  The Teacher ipod

The group meets every other week – lead by two staffers, one from Senator Inhofe’s office and the other from Senator Kennedy’s office.

After brief introductions, and an overview of the Coast 2 Coast Journey, one of the gentleman asked if I was tired – how funny he should ask!  My response was yes, yes I am!  He said welcome to Washington DC!

How simply insightful, supportive and motivating – as odd as that may sound.

After sharing the WaterIsLife.com message and aligning connections with partners that will be valuable to WaterIsLife.com’s success, we spent time discussing USAID and potential opportunities with FEMA.  It was a fantastic meeting with folks that have the knowledge and the experience to rock our world and create the change we seek.

In the meeting we discussed a return trip, and of course we would welcome the opportunity to continue to seek assistance in the funding and distribution of the water filters as well as creating sustainable water sources for African communities.

We will return to the Senate Office Building again tomorrow, with a trip to the Capitol Building in the afternoon.

I could get used to this lifestyle – dress in black, take public transportation, work on Health Care Reform, be a part of the U.N. Millennium Goal to reduce by half – by 2015 – the number of people without clean drinking water.

Well maybe not a reality, but walking Up The Hill sparked the dream…

I couldn’t help but to take a picture of Senator John McCain’s office!  I think I will stop in and say hello tomorrow!

We had the pleasure of presenting WaterIsLIfe.com and share our goal to help the children in Kenya with 3 congregations in Detroit this weekend!   Originally from Detroit, it was close to my heart to be able to return with a mission.  I will admit that this opportunity was a first for us, a distinct difference in the format of Sunday morning church than we are accustomed to.  We were ourselves and spoke from the heart explaining that working together, each one of us can help make a dent in the daunting task of saving lives in our global community.

Sharing the message that working collaboratively – by providing the water filter, providing a sustainable water source, medical training and education – will transform communities.  We also had very production meetings with Pastor Diane Washington – a dedicated supporter of WaterIsLife.com mission.  Her goal is to work with Detroit churches to bring 5000 filters to the children in Kenya as soon as possible.  Her inspiration and giving spirit reminds us that each day, no matter how small, a difference can be made.  If she takes only one filter to Africa in November – she has taken action to make the difference in one child’s life.

It seems quite odd that we are on day 15 of our Journey and continuing on.  Merlin and the War of the Dragons psp Our intuition tells us it’s time to return home, our purpose tells us to move on.

We now venture through Ohio – celebrating our daughter Picabo’s 14th Birthday at Cedar Point Amusement Park.  On Wednesday we will continue on to Washington D.C. to participate in Senator Inhofe’s Africa Senate Meeting.

After Washington DC, our Journey will continue on to Philadelphia, New York, Cape Cod, Boston, Bar Harbor, Portland, Maine, Fredericton New Brunswick, Hartford CT, Indianapolis, Tulsa, Oklahoma City and Albuquerque.  Please share our calendar with others – and contact us if you would like us to visit your city, organization or civic group. We try to wake with a smile each day set for adventure and those we may meet to share the WaterIsLife.com mission.  As long as everyone stays fed and is hydrated – we seem to run smoothly and having a blast.  The biggest challenge is adjusting to and understanding each new city, but Lola is helping to ease the stress of locating our destinations.

Summer in Chicago is fantastic!  The city is alive with music, art, shopping, eclectic dining, boating, all with a hint of European flair.  Our first stop of the day was for Miss Olivia.  She has been waiting her ‘whole life’ to visit an American Girl Store.  And so it was.  The American Girl Place on Michigan Ave.

          Waiting all my life!

After a Chicago Red Hot, WaterIsLife.com had the opportunity to spend time at Rotary International World Headquarters, and had a very productive meeting with Jim Grumley, a long-time Rotarian who has worked for years on water projects in Nigeria.  Also, we had the opportunity to connect with the Public Relations department – and we will move forward to work together on Rotary Water Projects in the US and Internationally.  Each Rotary Club is autonomous, and Rotary International exists to motivate and guide each of these clubs.  Bingo rip There are over 250,000 Rotary Clubs around the world – with many currently working on water projects as a priority.  If your not sure what a Rotary Club or Rotarian does – Google or Bing, I think you will be surprised!  Below is a shot of the Rotary International Board room, where Board Members from all over the globe convene to make a difference in the lives of millions.

With the continuous help and support from Lola, our trusty GPS unit and friend, she timely directed us to 110 N. Carpenter Street.  For those not aware this is Harpo Studios, The Oprah Winfrey Show!  Taping doesn’t start until late August, but a fantastic Associate Producer of the show had invited us to come for a visit.  We were able to take photos outside – but not inside…it’s the rules!

          The Badges!

As we entered the building and checked in with security, we were given Harpo Studios name badges. That, in and of itself, was cool!   Inside there is a grand staircase, which leads to a wonderful portrait of Oprah, from The Color Purple.  We met a wonderful gentleman – Senior Producer Joe, for a tour of the Studios. We visited the green rooms, took in the captivating photos along the studio halls – Nelson Mandela’s visit, girls from the South African school, which Oprah Foundation built, as well as every celebrity that you could imagine.  We retraced Oprah’s steps – as she would come from make up to the stage.  Before heading out to the stage her last stop is a mirror near the production room.  She touches up – a little hand sanitizer, which of course we felt it necessary to have a squirt, maybe some of her favorite Lancome Hand Lotion, shoes on – ready to roll.

In the room where Oprah tapes audio/voiceovers sat a box of Earl Grey Tea – Mark’s favorite since 1985!   Yes Mark, you and Oprah DO have something in common! The Tiger’s Tail move   Down Periscope trailer

We were able to share the WaterIsLife.com story – and talked about an upcoming initiative for WaterIsLife.com – soon to be announced on www.waterislife.com.

It may seem naïve of me, but if you remove the celebrity element and money from the equation – the company and legacy that Oprah has built is astounding.

The staff is diligently, and secretly, working on the premier show to air on Monday, Sept 14.  This is our first day back home from the Coast 2 Coast Journey – and we will all be glued to the tube that afternoon!

It was a very successful few days for WaterIsLife.com in Chicago, and Mark and I celebrated with a buffet at the Empress Casino – Woohoo!

          Fortress trailer

5000 children die each day from waterborne diseases.  While in Kenya, I met many of these children in need of clean water. Each little one a face, a name, a smile.  What they hide behind those smiles, is the basic need to have a clean water source to keep them from being sick – and some with compromised immune systems – from dying.  They may not be able to change their situation – but we can.

          FriendsThe Clements Family

On Tuesday, two of Picabo and Olivia’s swim friends brought their parents out to visit us during Week Without Water, and they all chipped in to help haul water with the girls.  Dana and Ryan Clements collected donations from their friends to sponsor our Week Without Water – for water filters to be taken to Kenya in August.  The family joined us on our afternoon trip to the ‘well.’

It was so wonderful to see two young children understanding the message that this isn’t about us, but the children in Africa.  They listened carefully as Picabo and Olivia proudly explained their new water routine.  The kids rode in the little red wagon down to the well, filled their buckets with water and sloshed back up Main Street.

They giggled the entire return journey – just as the children in Africa do.  It’s not a chore – it’s part of their life.

The parents offered to help but Ryan was determined to finish the task.  Dana learned the process of washing dishes – heating the water, filling up the sinks.  She realized how hard it must be to do this a few times a day in comparison to their dishwasher.  Ryan learned how we flush our toilets and shared a special story about how his family is learning to conserve water in their house.

Each of the children were very aware of the water crisis in Africa, and knew that they were doing their part to help make a difference in the lives of other children.

We sincerely thank Rod, Debra, Dana and Ryan for sharing in our experience, and for taking the time to learn more about our Week Without Water, supporting us and being a part of our adventure.  These actions, as small as they may seem will affect our world for 100s of generations to come.

We’re opening the lid on this one…

The average water use per person in the U.S. is 100 gallons per person per day.  We are hauling approximately 30 gallons per day as a family.  The largest water usage for us this week has been using 2 gallons of water to flush the toilets.  We learned quickly not to flush each time.  Let’s do the math.

One of the most  inspiring things for us this week has been having many people stop us during our water journey to talk about how Week Without Water has opened their eyes to the actual amount of water they use each day.  Each person has a different story of the excessiveness of their habits and they are making a conscious decision now as they approach simple tasks – washing hands, brushing teeth, using toilets.  Many in our community have taken note of water use – and will now behave differently as they go about their daily lives.  Our water will be turned on tonight at 5:00 p.m. and our greatest fear is that we return to the excessiveness.  Our commitment will stand to continue to flush less, think more, and remind each other often.

Mark’s random thoughts on day two of our Week Without Water adventure……

          • I woke up this morning with a hazy feeling that I had to go get water because my family needed it for survival!
          • Carrying two five gallon buckets full of water is heavy work. I thought I was in shape; maybe I’m not as much as I hoped
          • Going to the “well” is a social outing. I always see friends and strangers that say hi and chat.
          • It is unbelievable how much water we used before, and how careful we are now that we are hauling every drop.

          • Two large dogs, one cat, and two guinea pigs drink a lot of water everyday!
          • How many times will I go to the fridge to get ice and cold water?
          • It takes a fair amount of time out of our day just to get the water to our house.

          Yonkers Joe

          • A “low-flow toilet” still takes 1.5 – 2 gallons of water to flush. Washing your face and hands and brushing your teeth take at least that much. That adds up pretty fast when you have to carry it. Remember, I live with all girls.

          • Everything takes longer when you have to pour water from a bucket – washing the dishes, watering the plants and trees, washing your hands. noroxin

          • And finally. I am so proud of our daughters Picabo and Livvie. They are so adaptable and easy going. It is typically women and children who collect the water in Africa, (let’s not share that with Mark just yet) very early in the morning and very late into the evening – potentially placing them in dangerous situations.  They carry heavy buckets, long distances over rough terrain.  We have it easy by comparison, yet it is still a challenge.

The average rural household in Africa spends around ¼ of their day collecting water instead of working, learning a trade or getting an education.  A nearby clean water source for them would positively effect children’s education, healthcare and welfare and could dramatically transform their community.

So the little distance that I must walk to raise awareness of the water crisis for these children in Africa, is worth every step.

We are all very excited to see how the day plays out, and we find it amazing how often we are already thinking about the families and little ones in Africa, that do this each day.

          Morning Routine…

As we went about our morning, we saw how the chores have multiplied.  Instead of loading the dishwasher, turning it on and done – we use hauled water, heat enough for dishes and take the time to wash them.  Many people wash dishes by hand, and even when camping, washing dishes is ‘part of the fun.’ But in our new world this morning,  this is now one of the many morning chores to work into the schedule.

          Hand Washing…

We take for granted how clean our hands are.

          Heat buy

We are taught as a child to wash our hands all the time.  Doctors and experts tell us that to prevent colds and sickness, we need to wash our hands often and not overuse antibacterial lotion – use soap and water.

I have wanted to wash my hands at the tap so many times this morning.  Standing at the sink, foolishly turning on the faucet.  Yes, we are using antibacterial wipes, but in Africa they do not have access or the money for antibacterial lotion or wipes.  A clean water source is imperative to reduce these preventable diseases that are causing so many deaths.

The simple act of washing hands with soap and water can reduce diarrheal diseases in Africa by over 40%.  Dysentery and Diarrhea turn deadly in Africa for many with already compromised immune systems.

How many times throughout the day do you use your tap water to wash your hands?

Pay attention today to see how many times you wash your hands, and imagine – for that moment – if you couldn’t.

          It’s Not About Us…

Last night it was tremendously windy here in Verrado.  (The dog water outside was dirty this morning…do we change it or leave it?)  Our very dear friend Jenny emailed “she hopes that the wind will carry our spirit to Africa.”  And we are hoping it did…

he girls understand that it will be a hard week for us, but they have said that one hard week for us will equate to 52 easier weeks for the children in Africa – simply stated.  The girls made two trips to the Village Health and Sport Club which is our ‘well’ for the week.  Dinner is over, and I can hear Mark in the kitchen doing the dishes now.  ”It is a little interesting to try to rinse these dishes’ were his first comments,  ”but it’s just a small challenge.”  I am wondering, didn’t we use paper plates?  I have resisted the urge to go wash my hands numerous times already, and Olivia said that she tried to turn water on to do her teeth…then reality set in.  Tomorrow will be a day full of joys and hardships!
