You are not going to believe this…Two home builders in Edmond, OK have offered to help with Haiti by donating the profits from the sell of three homes that they have completed.  Antonio Aparicio and Brent Wilson are local builders with an excellent flair for making a beautiful home.  If you are in the market for a new home and want to help with Haiti at the same time, maybe one of these homes is for you.  Below are pics and links with virtual tours.

We have 3,600 filters in Haiti and en-route.  3,000 more will be ready for shipping at the end of the month.  We are at $45,000 raised for Haiti so far.  Your help has been critical to meeting the need with a response. Thank you for all your sacrifice.

We have many schools, businesses and organizations joining hands with us to bring more help to Haiti.  I hope everyone understands that as much as we would like to supply each group organizing fund raisers, filters, promo pieces etc. we can not afford to do this.  Our overhead is very low, no one is paid by Water Is Life, we have offices that are donated, and lots of volunteers who roll up their sleeves to help.  This way every donation each person gives goes to buy filters.  We have added a Media Kit link on the front page of the site where you can download pics, logos, banners, FAQ, Information sheets to help you in spreading the message.  You can go here download and print out hand outs, or put in your blog posts, emails, newsletters etc.

If you could do us a favor and Blog, Tweet, Email, Facebook your friends and get them involved in helping with spreading the message.  Water Is Life was featured on CNN and HLN this weekend.  We have news papers covering the story as well. We will have these posted for you soon.

Thank you for making a difference in Haiti.

Let me know how I can serve you,

Ken Surritte

I wanted to give you a quick update. First, thank you so much for all your help. Water Is Life has sent our emergency stockpile to Haiti. These filters were shipped to a staging area in Boston for IRD and USAID they are now on their way to Haiti with the medical team from USAID. The filters will be handed out to the people coming to the hospital and taught how to use them.
I can’t tell you how much we appreciate Senator Jim Inhoff and his staff. He has been helping to get these doors opened for us to partner with the medical teams going over.
Water Is Life has thousands more filters are being shipped direct from the factory, first shipment will arrive later this week.
I have a favor to ask: If you could Tweet, email, call, use Facebook and other means of social media to help spread the word for us. When the news teams leave Haiti in the next couple weeks, and the relief workers leave, the people of Haiti will still need water. The filters will give them clean water for a year.

Thank you for helping to raise awareness and encouraging others to help.

You are helping to make a difference in Haiti!

Water filters heading to Boston to join International Relief  and Development shipment to Haiti.

By getting the www.WaterIsLife.com water filters into the hands of thousands in need in Port Au Prince, we can drastically help the area, and provide them with clean water until internal infrastructure and pumps can be repaired.  Prior to the earthquake, clean water was a huge issue for many Haitians, and with the aftermath just about to begin, the lack of clean water will become life threatening to all there.

Long after the news leaves and the relief workers are gone, the need for water will still be there for the people of Haiti. The portable filters will provide them a years worth of water.  Donate and be a part of the relief effort!

I have been on the phone all day talking with the folks in DC.  Senator Inhoff’’s office is helping us to get hundreds of filters into Haiti now and helping us get the door for thousands in the next few weeks.  One of the  things that drives me crazy is the fact that in a few weeks the reports on Haiti will stop but the need will continue.  When the media leaves, the relief workers will be gone and yet the need will still be ongoing. By sending filters we will be able to help LONG TERM, for up to a year. By the end of the year we will be able to have permanent solutions in place.

How can you help? Donate filters, spread the word, pray for the people of Haiti.   We ALL have to join hands together to make a difference.

2009 has been an amazing year.  It started with me just getting out of the hospital and recovering from surgery from an infected spider bite I got while in Africa. Lots of drama and close calls, emergency surgery, MRSA infection, a week in the hospital and several months of rehab.  I am happy to report that I am all better and MRSA free!

This experience has taught me a couple things.

Life is a gift. Celebrate life!  Each day is truly a gift from God.  Today may be your last.  What am I going to do that will last after I am gone?

Value your family and friends. The people He has put into my life are the greatest treasure. I have the best girls in the world!  Nita, Kendra and Kelsey have been awesome through this ordeal. However, they are telling all kinds of wild stories on me about things I “supposedly” said while in the hospital. Don’t believe them. They are making stuff up I promise!

Make a difference.  Life is short. I have become a fanatic.  I know you find that hard to believe. While I have not been able to travel as much, we have been working very hard to get each of the orphanages more self sufficient.  We have also developed some strategic relationships with groups and organizations for Water Is Life.

Even in a tough economy we have made giant leaps ahead, that is because of your faithfulness.  2010 will have its own challenges but together we will continue to make a difference!

We love you,

Ken, Nita and the girls

Monday night Edmond North HS DECA students raised over $10,000 for Water Is Life.  I have to tell you to see so many students giving so much time to put on a first class show was inspiring.  This generation “gets it” they understand that it takes the efforts of all of us to help the less fortunate in the world.

You can read The Daily Oklahoman article here. Don’t miss the pictures! See them here.

Our beautiful sunny Sunday morning was shattered as Nita reads this article, “AIDS, malaria eclipse the biggest child-killers” We are reminded how important the work that Water is Life is doing and how the rest of the world is literally dying for this simple solution.

From the AP report. “Diarrheal diseases, such as cholera and rotavirus, kill 1.5 million kids each year, most under 2 years old. The children die from dehydration, weakened immune systems and malnutrition. Often they get sick from drinking dirty water.” Read more.

The report goes on to ask; “How did the leading killers end up at the bottom of the global health agenda? I don’t know,” Wecker said at a recent GAVI meeting in Hanoi. “We’ve got the tools. We’re not looking for the next technological breakthrough. It’s here now and it’s not being used.” Read more.

Death from contaminated water can be stopped by providing clean water, and a simple concoction to help the child back to health; “Death can often be prevented by giving children fluid replacement, a simple recipe of salt and sugar mixed with clean water to help ward off dehydration. Yet 60 percent of children with diarrhea never receive the concoction, according to a WHO and UNICEF report released last month.” Read more.

Thank you for your help in making a difference!

Dear WaterIsLife.com;

You travelled through Indianapolis in September to tell us about Water Is Life.  My students were so impressed with the outreach that they asked for permission to host a bake sale.  We baked things over the weekend of October 25th, then we stayed after school to decorate and package our treats.  The next day, Tuesday, October 27th, we held our bake sale.

We raised $144.04 for Water Is Life with our event.  It’s amazing how a group of 18-20 young people can reach their arms and hearts around the world, isn’t it?

I’m attaching a few pictures for you to enjoy of our bake sale.  Thank you for your sharing with us.

The WaterIsLife.com Team participated in the Women’s Conference 2009 in Long Beach!  Over the two days, more than 20,000 women gathered to share unique journeys with a powerful community of women and be united under one theme – Be Who You Are…An Architect of Change.

Womens Conference Oct 09 (23)

WaterIsLife.com sponsored a booth at the Night at the Village which sold out with over 10,000 attendees.  The Village really was the place to be as women had a chance to meet and mix and mingle with – and be inspired by – world class speakers, best selling authors, chefs and true Architects of Change.

In the opening ceremonies Maria Shriver said “Women should learn to trust ourselves and have confidence – self trust, an idea whose time has come.”

WaterIsLife.com made amazing connections with so many Architects of Change, and discussed partnerships with many organizations and individuals wanting to help children obtain clean water around the world.  One of the cool moments of the conference was a chance to talk with Dr. Jane Goodall. “Every individual counts.  Every individual has a role to play.  Every individual makes a difference.”

Womens Conference Oct 09 (27)

Premal Shah, Founder of kiva.org shared his insight into starting the organization which provides micro-loans to low-income entrepreneurs.  He said, “dont’ seek to be validated, don’t ask for permission or approval, just get started!  What great advice Premal!  Get involved, be an Architect of Change, and help bring clean water to children around the world!

I had one of the teachers at a school I spoke at this week send me an article that I had to pass along.  It is titled: “Safe Drinking Water: A New Cause that Needs Continued Support” Here is how the article starts: “By the looks of it, a new cause has been born: bringing access to safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene to those on the planet who still lack it.

Battle of Britain video

In the past few weeks superstars, led by Jessica Biel, pledged to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro; and Matt Damon told his story in Parade Magazine…all to raise awareness of safe drinking water and sanitation.

It goes on to say: “Annually about $6 billion in development aid goes to water and sanitation programs globally, but $18 billion is the estimated amount required each year to meet the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) target for water and sanitation. This is a significant gap that only a coordinated global strategy can address.”

It is encourgaing to see so many others rolling up their sleeves to get involved in the crisis.  I hope that the high profile people will not only bring awareness but also the much needed aid to help with this growing world wide problem.

RELATIONSHIPS is one of the most important if not the most important word in our lives.  We come into this world with relationships, mom and dad.  As we grow we bump into all kinds of special people. Our futures shaped, our path changed, our eternity determined by the relationships we have. I want to share with you about one of my new friends.

I met a remarkable young lady at a conference led by Les Brown

As we head west, across the flat open range, dotted with mesa’s reflecting the early morning sunshine, we quietly reflect on the 40-day journey.

With the presentations and meetings on the Coast 2 Coast Journey finished, I feel a sense of urgency – get home and move forward on building WaterIsLife.com with the rest of the team.  Bring water to the kids in Kenya, in Haiti, in Honduras, in so many other areas of the world.   I am not a politician, not a preacher not an activist, not a social entrepreneur.  I am but one person, with an amazing family that wants this suffering to end.  Water is a basic need, one that we all have a right to.

With the amount of money used in so many areas of our lives and world, it is challenging to understand how and why we can’t solve this crisis.  Bring water to those dying – strategize, collaborate, focus our efforts and solve.  It’s we in the United States do best.

During our travels, we were astounded at the amount of people that want to help solve the crisis.

We must collaborate and work together – schools, churches, civic organizations, corporations, small businesses, other water organizations and non-profits – and begin to make a dent in the daunting statistics that surround us.

WaterIsLife.com has achieved the first step of their first year goal – to bring filters to Haruma, a slum just outside of Nairobi.  We must continue to work hard to meet the rest of the goal to bring filters to the next two villages in Kenya.  They are in desperate need of clean water.  Please think… How Can You Help?

As the girls reflect, their single focus is getting home!  I have not, in all of our 40 days, seen the girls rise and shine early with such enthusiasm! They led the morning chores, prepared trailer for driving and sat in the truck waiting to go!  They are anxious to see their friends at school and swim and returning to their comfy bed – and a refrigerator that doesn’t throw things at you when you open it!

Our visit to Sycamore School was fantastic!   200 passionate kids was an inspiration! They had so many questions and were truly understanding of the crisis and the solutions.  The school’s community service group OHANA, is planning to spearhead a project to fund water filters, and a few of the students are even hoping to make the trip to Africa to distribute the filters!

I was not confident that I would make it in to his office. While waiting, I spent time talking with his wonderful staff, and meeting others that were waiting to see the Senator.  The press were anxious to talk with the Senator as petitions had just been delivered to the State House, and they were anxious to get his statement.

Long story short, the Senator thought that I was an organization coming in as Lobbyist for a water company.  He was pleasantly surprised to find out I was there to talk with him about WaterIsLife.com and discuss solutions.  He promised to find a way to help.

We talked for quite a long time and then he offered to have Josh, one of his staffers take a picture.  He also shared a story of a personal friend who has completed water wells in Africa. River Queen movie download

At the conclusion of our meeting, he asked his staff to arrange a tour of the State Building for us, and then to call him when we arrived at the Senate Chamber, as he would like to come up to have an official photo taken in the Chamber, and bring us out on the balcony over looking Boston Commons, one of his favorite places.

The Senator has served the State of Mass in the State Building for over 26 years.  He shared stories with us about the history of Boston Commons, and shared a personal story about Caroline Kennedy as they both sat on the Committee to create the JFK memorial statue at the State building.

The Senator took time to meet with the WaterIsLife.com team, get to know each of us, and talk about the water crisis – all on a day that was filled with pressing matters for the Chairman of the Committee to fill Sen. Edward Kennedy’s seat.  An important issue for our Country.

          That’s respectable, dignified and amazing.

Due to the long day at the Mass State Building, our trip to Cambridge was abbreviated. No time for an aggressive street team, but we were able to visit Harvard Medical School, saw the Business school and enjoyed the Charles River.

Alas, in the spirit of bipartisanship, we head from the Democratic State of Mass. to Kennebunk, Maine.

We are almost to our Coast 2 Coast goal – and will make our flip turn after a presentation at MeritusU in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

New England has been quite an experience, one with political significance for the Coast 2 Coast Team, one I am guessing our daughters will pass down to the next generation.

We are on day 25 of the 40-day Journey for WaterIsLife.com.  Or as the girls put it, only two weeks to go!  We are weary, but that’s what New York City does to you!

New York is spectacular, and with a stop at charity:water offices, it was inspirational.  charity:water has made such progress in its first three years – providing clean water around the world.  The Golden Child movie download Scott Harrison started the organization with only a few volunteers and has grown it into a vibrant non-profit with a full staff, and is in the process of moving into new offices in Soho. The Man in the Iron Mask онлайн порно каштанка  I was able to see Scott Harrison, the Founder – but only as he sat as his desk working.

The thrill was the office energy.  I had the chance to talk with a few of the staff members and see how change can happen with dedication, perseverance and an amazing group of people with fantastic ideas and motivation – all working collaboratively for a cause.

Our NYC agenda also included an early morning to hang out at the TODAY Show Plaza.  With WaterIsLife.com banner in hand, a few trains and a taxi we made it to the line to enter the Plaza early enough to score a prime location.  We were pleased that we chose Thursday as our targeted day as we steered clear of Friday due to the Concerts.  Good planning on our part – Miley Cyrus was the concert on Friday and the line of camped out kids had already formed on Thursday morning to enter the plaza Friday.

          Today Show Plaza

While in line, staff answered questions, sold poster board and sharpies for $3, and offered a free breakfast to all in line.  They let us in at 6:40 a.m., checked all bags and read all signs.

Nervous moment, our Team was stopped and told “no signs with .com.”

          The Ballad of Josie release

With a few smiles, and kind words, they let us in.  We grabbed a front row spot located near Dean and Deluca – this process has a definite strategy behind it.

The crowd became friendly with one another, and camaraderie was formed by the end of the morning.  Throughout our day in the City, we would run into other Plaza goers with smiles and greetings.  We talked with many on the Plaza about WaterIsLife.com and all were excited for us and helped position our banner.  It was a blustery day, but in the end WaterIsLife.com team hit the trifecta.

Hoda walked passed us with a smile on her way to the studio – that was a fun warm up to our morning.   We watched on screens provided as the Anchors chatted, read, had makeup touch ups, adjusted and blew their noses.   As the show was underway, Matt Lauer, Anne Curry, Natalie and Al came out to the Plaza.  State’s Evidence film They were extremely friendly, and went out of their way to talk with everyone.  The entire process was wonderfully warm and genuine. All of the NBC staff on the Plaza were congenial and talkative, from when we first entered the line  - all the way through the two hour show.

For Today Show regulars, you know Lenny!  We were able to hang and talk with Lenny for a while.  One of the Today Show producers (one that I remember emailing a press release to) came over to talk with Lenny.  Out of respect, I didn’t interject in their conversation – but you know I was tempted!

          Lenny!

One of the segments outside on the Plaza was Martha Stewart.  She did a mosaic segment with Anne, Matt and Al.  For those that have known me over the last two decades – I am a Martha fan!  I was no more than 20 feet from her, and was on camera during her segment.  If hat’s my fifteen minutes, I’ll take it.

          Martha!

Al came over to our area and did a weather promo in front of WaterIsLife.com sign.  The Coast 2 Coast Team made it on air.  Our goal complete.

With a handshake from Al, photo with Natalie and weather segment in front of our banner, we were satisfied with the accomplishment.  A cup of hot chocolate and Chai at Dean and Deluca, and on with our day.

          Friendship Meeting

We were invited to present WaterIsLife.com at a Quaker Friendship Meeting in Plymouth Meeting, PA.  The Quakers use the word Meeting as many would us the word church. Peaceful Warrior video   Quaker Meetings are all over the Philadelphia area – each township, city or burrow may have it’s own Friendship Meeting.  In most cases the Meetings are very old buildings made of stone with sparce interiors.  The Plymouth Meeting House was built in 1709 and was later used by George Washington during the war as a hospital supporting Valley Forge.  The town is quaint consisting of very old buildings and homes, and one can feel the Quaker influence and presence.

We were welcomed by friends, and invited into the Meeting House.  It was very simple interior and smelt strongly of must (is that a word) and old wood.  The Meetings for Worship are based on the principle of silent, direct communication with God, with no pastor, music or order of service.  The Meeting House and all its arrangements have been kept quite plain so that the worshipper will not be distracted from the main purpose of the service.

As the group settles into reverent silence for one hour, we sit in meditation and prayer.  As the Quakers describe, this was an opportunity to take stock in our lives, review our hopes and aspirations, consider each for himself whether the things accomplished during the week represent real value and worthy contribution.

Although the Meeting for Worship is based on silence, all are free to speak, and from time to time, some may feel a call to rise and share their thoughts with the group. Charlotte’s Web movie   One older, stately woman stood up and told a story of a young women who attended Wellesley during the time of the Atomic bomb.

As we sat on the original benches, facing others, we enjoyed the silence and smells of the meeting. The doors and windows were all open, a slight breeze cut through the humidity and symphony of Cicadas.

After the hour of silence, the Meeting is closed when those on the facing benches shake hands.

Take note, if we return to another Quaker Meeting, I will plan to choose a bench where one does not sit directly in front of the slowly ticking clock…tick…tick..tick.

          tick...tick...tick

We then shared a potluck with all, and presented the WaterIsLife.com story.  So many at the meeting took WaterIsLife.com materials so that they could organize their own presentations, at their work and in their communities.  By chance, kismet, serendipity, whatever you wish to call it, a woman from the community – not a Quaker – had heard about our visit to the Meeting. She brought a friend and arrived late during the presentation.  During questions her friend stood up and said he was from Kenya, his family is in Kisumu and deeply thanked our team, and all those at the meeting for caring for his people.  He believes that due to the government disconnection with the people – the best way to help the Africans is to develop these grass root assistance programs.  He believes they are the most effective.  Encouraging!

We have already been in touch via email, and he will be valuable partner with WaterIslife.com as we develop, specifically in filter distribution.

The Quaker movement in our modern times is intriguing, but seemed confusing.  With more research and discussion, I am sure we could grasp the concept and reason so many are still dedicated the Quaker beliefs and attitudes.

For now, it was a moment on our journey that we will all reflect on for a long time.  If there were a way to capture the smell, the sight, the sound of silence, it would truly still not be as remarkable as we will remember.

To know that Quakers are so willing to help children in Africa today, helps reinforce that all walks of life in our global community want to reach out in our small world to assist others.  Now we just need to gather together, and get it done!

Yous know we tasted Philly; Independence Hall, Liberty Bell, South Street, The Crew Boathouses, and of course, Philly Cheese Steaks.  FYI, they also make a Philly Chicken Cheese Steak or just veggies – whodathunk they would be so accommodating!

Thank you to Sally and Paige, as well as all the others that helped make our trip to Philadelphia successful!

With many highlights – and ones that so many others have experienced before us – spending time with Luke Holland from Senator Inhofe’s office was pinnacle.  He took us on a private tour of the Capitol Building, including a ride in the tram which transports Senators from the Russell Senate offices underground to the Capitol Building.  There is a digital clock placed near the tram so that the Senators know how many minutes they have remaining to cast their vote, as each vote is only open for 15 minutes.  The Building was a humbling experience, and makes one reflect on what each of us are doing as citizens to help –  are we making history in our own lives and communities.

Mark, the girls and I enjoyed talking with Senator Inhofe’s wonderful staff, and stopped in to say hi to staffers in John McCain’s office (they are not even from AZ!).  We met Patrick in Senator Edward Kennedy’s office – his parents are friends with Senator Tom Kennedy, who we will meet to share the WaterIsLife.com story in Boston.

The Coast 2 Coast Team spent the day in D.C.  Blindly, I took D.C.’s trusty public transportation system  - the bus and then Metro in for 8:00 a.m. meeting at the Russell Senate Office Building.  Many of you know about my compulsion to be on time – I won’t even tell you what time I was up in the RV blow drying my hair!

The country’s heartbeat is felt the moment you step from the Metro.  A few blocks from Union Station, on Delaware Street, two Air Force One helicopters flew overhead and circled, I am assuming they disappeared to land on the lawn of our White House…good Morning DC!

For me, the actual walk up The Hill was a moving moment.  I was alone, it was early, there were not many out and about as Congress is in recess, and I had a mission to share the WaterIsLife.com story with all that would listen.  I felt full and determined.

After sharing the WaterIsLife.com message and aligning connections with partners that will be valuable to WaterIsLife.com’s success, we spent time discussing USAID and potential opportunities with FEMA.  It was a fantastic meeting with folks that have the knowledge and the experience to rock our world and create the change we seek.

In the meeting we discussed a return trip, and of course we would welcome the opportunity to continue to seek assistance in the funding and distribution of the water filters as well as creating sustainable water sources for African communities.

We will return to the Senate Office Building again tomorrow, with a trip to the Capitol Building in the afternoon.

I could get used to this lifestyle – dress in black, take public transportation, work on Health Care Reform, be a part of the U.N. Millennium Goal to reduce by half – by 2015 – the number of people without clean drinking water.

Well maybe not a reality, but walking Up The Hill sparked the dream…

I couldn’t help but to take a picture of Senator John McCain’s office!  I think I will stop in and say hello tomorrow!

We had the pleasure of presenting WaterIsLIfe.com and share our goal to help the children in Kenya with 3 congregations in Detroit this weekend!   Originally from Detroit, it was close to my heart to be able to return with a mission.  I will admit that this opportunity was a first for us, a distinct difference in the format of Sunday morning church than we are accustomed to.  We were ourselves and spoke from the heart explaining that working together, each one of us can help make a dent in the daunting task of saving lives in our global community.

Sharing the message that working collaboratively – by providing the water filter, providing a sustainable water source, medical training and education – will transform communities.  We also had very production meetings with Pastor Diane Washington – a dedicated supporter of WaterIsLife.com mission.  Her goal is to work with Detroit churches to bring 5000 filters to the children in Kenya as soon as possible.  Her inspiration and giving spirit reminds us that each day, no matter how small, a difference can be made.  If she takes only one filter to Africa in November – she has taken action to make the difference in one child’s life.

We were able to share the WaterIsLife.com story – and talked about an upcoming initiative for WaterIsLife.com – soon to be announced on www.waterislife.com.

It may seem naïve of me, but if you remove the celebrity element and money from the equation – the company and legacy that Oprah has built is astounding.

The staff is diligently, and secretly, working on the premier show to air on Monday, Sept 14.  This is our first day back home from the Coast 2 Coast Journey – and we will all be glued to the tube that afternoon!

Rocky III divx The following is an article that appeared in the China Daily newspaper.  She was the keynote speaker at the Symposium on Water Security held by the China Institute for International Strategic Studies.  The title is: “Water, Water, Everywhere, but Little to Drink”

It’s an issue no less important than life itself, even though many describe it just as water crisis.

When we look at the amount of water in the world, it may seem impossible to imagine we could experience shortages amounting to a crisis. More than 70 percent of the earth’s surface is covered by water. But 97.5 percent of that is salt water, and most of the freshwater is frozen in the ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica. Nonetheless, 10 million cubic km of freshwater can be available, much more than the 8,000 cu km needed each year, to support the world’s 6.5 billion people.

          Gryphon hd

The problem is that much of the water is found in the wrong places, in wrong volumes and at the wrong times. As a result, 1 billion people do not get the 5 liters of clean water per day just to survive, and 2 billion do not have access to the 50 liters per day to satisfy their basic needs of drinking, cleaning and sanitation.

More than 90 percent of the water consumed by humans is used by agriculture. Climate change, population growth and depletion of traditional sources of supply combine with the above factors to create what some call “a perfect storm” that could push countries into violent conflicts. And with its huge population and rising standard of living, China is at the heart of this crisis.

My focus is on two major themes: the demand and supply approach to addressing water shortage and trans-boundary water resources management.

That water is the supporter of life makes addressing its shortage even more difficult. Water is traditionally regarded as a “common” good with no individuals being held responsible for it. More and more communities around the world charge fees to homeowners for the water they get from municipalities. This discourages waste and has created a market for plumbing fixtures and appliances that use water economically.

But domestic use of water accounts for only 10 percent of human consumption. The same price constraints do not often apply to the 90 percent of the water that agriculture consumes. Even in many arid regions, farmers either do not pay for water or pay just a fraction of what homeowners do, so they have less incentive to conserve it. That deprives water suppliers of funds that could be used to improve infrastructure and reduce waste further.

Several decades ago, it seemed that rivers and lakes damaged by pollution had been lost forever. But enlightened policymakers across the world realized the terrible price their communities were paying in health, safety and economy because of these degraded resources. So they drew up programs that have achieved remarkable success in restoring the health and vitality of water resources once written off as “dead”.

In Britain, the River Thames was once a polluted mess that could not sustain life. But now it is home to a thriving marine life. It still serves its important role as a major transportation route to the London region. Dramatic changes in standards of shipping and industrial use have shown that good policy can recover these resources for the people.

Enterprises used to cheap and easy methods of waste disposal have resisted governments whenever they have imposed limits on the volume of industrial wastes that could be released into waterways. But such enterprises have learned new techniques for dealing with waste, too, and businesses have grown to provide the services necessary to meet the new standards.

But not all degraded water resources can be restored. Communities around the world have been forced to tap rivers, lakes and aquifers, sometimes millions of years old, far beyond the limit at which they can replenish themselves. Above ground, lakes are shrinking and rivers are being reduced to pathetic flows, or drying up altogether. Below ground, a largely invisible crisis is unfolding as millions of wells are sunk into aquifers – 4 million in Bangladesh alone. Many aquifers are replenishable, but not all. And many that can be replenished do not get enough rain to match demand. Sometimes the empty cavities simply collapse, putting them beyond use forever.

Water, water, everywhere, but little to drinkIn his recent book, Plan B 3.0, Lester Brown catalogues the results. Water tables are falling, sometimes by many meters a year, in the breadbaskets of China, India, the US, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Israel and Mexico. Pumps are being drilled a kilometer or more into the earth to find water, thousands of more wells have dried up altogether and agricultural yields are shrinking. These countries contain more than half the world’s people and produce most of its grain, warns Brown. And almost forgotten amid the human suffering are the terrible consequences for the natural world: freshwater fish population fell by half between 1970 and 2000, says the UN.

Dramatic efforts to reroute water supplies only forestall the problem and create environmental dangers of their own. Unless people can understand the value of water, become part of the process of conservation and begin using water carefully, the crisis will remain. Technologies for water preservation and wastewater recycling for human use are being advanced. More efficient irrigation, erosion prevention and rain harvesting are techniques that ought to become standard practice. And planting trees and removing more “thirsty” species of plants can make a significant contribution to conserving water resources.

Another interesting approach to conserving water is trade. Countries in the Middle East import food products that they cannot grow because of their dry climate. Encouraging regions that have ample water to produce water intensive crops and products is another way of letting drier countries or regions “import” water. Analyzing a country’s competitive advantage for economic development should include a consideration of its water supply and the burden that certain forms of economic activity impose not only in the short term, but also in the long term on vital water resources.

Putting a price on water is not the same as “privatizing” water supply. It is a mechanism of putting water in its proper place in the calculation of public interest.

Water has emerged as a key issue that could determine whether Asia is headed toward mutually beneficial cooperation or deleterious interstate competition. Climate change and environmental degradation in the form of shrinking forests and swamps, which foster a cycle of chronic flooding and droughts, have made the specter of water wars in Asia more haunting.

Given that the watershed originates in China, it is up to Beijing to lead the conservation process. There are many examples of successful trans-boundary water managements to show that such regimes can be valuable to all the participants.

In China itself, ordinary people are fast becoming environmentally conscious, which makes them want eco-friendly products and ready to embrace the values that could lead to a change in the way water is managed.

Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events ipod

The Mystical Adventures of Billy Owens download

Breach of environmental norms by a country can dissuade consumers in foreign markets from buying its products. If China plays a leadership role in water resources management it would not only contribute seriously to the security of its own long-term water supply, but also enhance its brand as a source of desirable and eco-friendly products.

The author is former prime minister of Canada. The article is an abstract from her keynote speech at a recent international symposium on water security held by China Institute for International Strategic Studies.

I am having issues with the blog and firewalls in other countries.  I wanted you to know about the news I just received a few hours ago from home about one of my good friends.

The International Many of you know my friend Tim Kendall.  He had just fulfilled his life long dream of opening a computer store in Moore.  He was working at the store, stood on a chair, and the chair collapsed under him.  He broke several bones in his hand, arm and destroyed his shoulder.  Yesterday they did a shoulder replacement surgery and Tim made it home and was resting.  Wednesday morning Tim was unresponsive, they rushed him to the ER and he walked from this world into the next.  Tim was a committed Christian, family man and a dear friend.  His laughter was infectious, and everyone he met was immediately his friend.  He is going to be missed!  I had the joy of being able to preform the wedding ceremony between he and Sherry, the love of his life.  His step daughter Gail, was raised as his own and thought of Tim as her father.  She graduated from High School a few weeks ago.  I talked with Gail several times and she seems to be doing ok. She is having to call a lot of people and retelling the story is taking its toll on this teenager.
Please pray for these two ladies as they now are faced with the coming days.
