‘Water is Life’ Archive

I got this today from an elementary school who have been raising funds.  I can’t tell you how moved I am by the schools who are getting involved.  This is one of many but the story rings true.

Dear Water Is Life,

I have been blessed to be a part of a story that I must share with you. I am a counselor at an at-risk elementary school in Bethany, OK.  When our school heard of the earthquake in Haiti, we wanted to help.  We decided to have a coin drive to raise money to help bring clean water to the people of Haiti through Water is Life.

What a wonderful opportunity this was for our students to help people of the world in deep need and what an occasion to allow our students to be the world citizens that we encourage them to be.  I wish you could have seen the proud faces of children coming to make their contribution of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters “Chink, chink” in the “Help for Haiti” bucket.  What a joy!

Overall, approximately 3,500 pennies plus other coins and cash were donated with small, caring hands which came to a grand total of $144.25.  I truly believe that every penny counts.

2009 has been an amazing year.  It started with me just getting out of the hospital and recovering from surgery from an infected spider bite I got while in Africa. Lots of drama and close calls, emergency surgery, MRSA infection, a week in the hospital and several months of rehab.  I am happy to report that I am all better and MRSA free!

This experience has taught me a couple things.

Life is a gift. Celebrate life!  Each day is truly a gift from God.  Today may be your last.  What am I going to do that will last after I am gone?

Value your family and friends. The people He has put into my life are the greatest treasure. I have the best girls in the world!  Nita, Kendra and Kelsey have been awesome through this ordeal. However, they are telling all kinds of wild stories on me about things I “supposedly” said while in the hospital. Don’t believe them. They are making stuff up I promise!

Make a difference.  Life is short. I have become a fanatic.  I know you find that hard to believe. While I have not been able to travel as much, we have been working very hard to get each of the orphanages more self sufficient.  We have also developed some strategic relationships with groups and organizations for Water Is Life.

Even in a tough economy we have made giant leaps ahead, that is because of your faithfulness.  2010 will have its own challenges but together we will continue to make a difference!

Someone said, “You make a living by what you get, but you make a life by what you give.” Children’s Day is June 1 in China and we were able to celebrate it in one of the most special places in the world. Our friends in the orphanage and our team had a great time playing games, singing songs, sharing stories and making plans. We had an amazing demonstration by lead teacher who is doing WONDERS with the children. We also met a new volunteer from Canada who is comes everyday to give her self to help…who says that there are no HEROS today. Mrs. Serlina is a hero!

One of the things that I tell every team that goes over to another country to help, is, “You have to be flexible.”  Cultural differences, different kinds of food, language barriers, sleep patterns are disrupted, so many things are different and if you are not prepared can throw you for a loop. In just a few hours I leave for China with some teams to work with some of our friends in China.

We are already learning we have to be flexible…Visa applications have been delayed and little did we know that a bug like H1N1 or Swine Flu could cause such panick in people.  We have just gotten word the Central Gov has issued warnings and restrictions that will keep us out of the univeristies we  were going to be going to, to teach and do sports camps.  Flexible.  One door shuts there are others that open.  These next few weeks will have lots more oppurtunities to exercise flexiblilty.  Remember our teams, and Nita and I as we lead…we will have to be flexible and respond in love instead of reacting in frustration.

While in Africa in Nov. I was bitten by a spider, when I came home it got infected. To complicate things I got slammed with MRSA (Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus) 3 ER visits, emergency surgery to remove a huge section out of my back, 1 week in the hospital and months of recuperation and reinfection.

The whole process has been amazing.

I have had so many people praying and I was off of the wound vac weeks ahead of the doctors schedule. Now my wound is all closed up, still kinda nasty looking…I will not be wearing any Speedos. Ha!

The infectious disease doctor has been great. He has done his best to prepare me for the inevitable, life with MRSA. He has kept telling me, I would never be free from MRSA, and would have to deal with continuing complications and infections. Last week, I told him, “I believe that God has healed me from all this.” His response was skeptical as he rammed the foot long wire up both nostils…ugh. Four Rooms divx This week I got the call from his office and they shared the good news. I do not have MRSA!
I am a walking miracle!

Please pray for the work we are involved in with Hearts and Hands and Water is Life. The “Butterfly Theory” says: “a butterfly flaps its wings and half way around the world, there is a tsunami.” What is happening in our economy is the butterfly flapping, the effect is, that what we are feeling in the areas we are working is tragic. The economy in the US has had a profound effect. Food is scarce in many places we are working in Africa, people have lost their jobs, one city we work in in China has closed 10,000 factories, work on the Agape Home in India has had to be put on hold.

We had anticipated taking thousand of filters to Africa in August we have had to push that back to November so we have enough to filters to give the people in the area. We know this may have caught us by surprise but it has not caught God by surprise.

I wanted you to meet an amazing young lady, her name is Abby.  She came with her mom and brother to visit me while I was recouping from the spider bite I got in Africa.  She listened intently while I told stories about the children in Africa.  She went home and began thinking of ways to help the children in Africa who do not have clean water. She took her Spring Break and set up a Lemonade Stand for Water Is Life. She raised money for 20 filters! That means 20 children will have clean water for a year!

Another thing that she has done has started talking to her school teachers and principle about Water is Life coming to her school and telling all her classmates about the water problems around the world.  In April, we are doing two assemblies at her school. I will keep you posted.  It is amazing seeing students here in the US, helping children half way around the world. The youngest of humanity helping those who can not!

Eight Americans and one driver, my new friend Boney.  The trip that I have been dreaming and praying about since the third grade was about to begin.  After an astounding fly-over the Sahara Steptoe and Son film The Pearl of Death movie full Desert, a landing in Nairobi and a vehicle waiting for our group – we were ready for a restful evening at the Methodist Guest House.  The first day was a day of ministry in the middle of what seemed like endless African plains – a ranch and home for street boys.  The next day included an early morning visit to talk with street girls and their little ones, and provide them with much needed nourishment.   A drive past the US Embassy and United Nations – no pictures please – followed by  an amazingly hopeful and energetic visit to the Humari Slum.

Meeting, visiting, and dancing with the villagers filled our day with Discovery Channel moments.  An Ethiopian dinner satisfied our adventurous taste buds.

The next glorious day was a flight to Kisumu – the home of Obama’s step grandmother –to enjoy a sunset on Lake Victoria.  The day included a stop at a local fish market where Tilapia was prepared with Sukumu Wiki and Ugali and eaten with our fingers – tasty!                         

 

The next two days were filled with local culture immersion.  This is where the Water Is Life straw distribution began.  Village visits, song and dance, special moments to meet and talk with villagers suffering with AIDS/HIV, and attending a local soccer tournament – in Spike Lee at a Lakers game style!    Laughing, giggling and making connections with children in the villages and helping to solve the pure water crisis in Africa is an amazing way to touch and reach out to these children, one by one.  An experience that will touch your heart and change your soul.

 

After a few more mesmerizing sunsets on Lake Victoria, a beautiful drive thru Kenya, a night at Lake Nukura Game Lodge including  two safaris and wonderful cabanas with delectable meals – our experience was coming to a close.

Leah – Maisha Village

On a trip to distribute Water Is Life straws to over 200 children at a local school in Maisha – we were greeted by the children all dressed in their blue and white uniforms, some with shoes, some without, shiny white smiles, with an undercurrent of giggling from excitement.   We had a little time to visit with the kids while the leaders greeted each other.  I played a question and answer game with the large group of children. 

You ask me a question about my life in America, and then I will ask you a question about your life in Kenya.  A young inquisitive girl asked the first question.  She asked another question, another question and another.  I invited many others to ask questions as well – only Leah was brave enough or curious enough to shyly continue the game.  All 200 of us sang a song together and we gave out the Water is Life straws which were received with amazing enthusiasm.  We bid the children goodbye and the children ran down the dirt road with water straws hanging from their necks, confident in the pure water that they can now drink for refreshment and life.  At the end of a long, hot day, our team was invited to enjoy a local soccer tournament – treated like Spike Lee at a Lakers game – front row and center.  After the game began, I felt a tap on my shoulder – it was Leah.  She had walked to the game to find me, and to present me with a very special gift.  She hand made a Christmas card for me with a piece of cardboard, dusty white paper taped over it with masking tape, and a lovely greeting to me written in sparkly glitter pens.  My heart stopped.  That someone would think so much of me to go home, find supplies in a very impoverished village, create a holiday card and walk to present it to me – was more than I could comprehend at that moment.  I thanked her and invited her to sit with me in the VIP row of the game.  100s of other children stared in awe of her, sitting and touching the Mzungo as she wrote notes in my personal journal and drew a map of her village so that when I return, I can find her.  If handing out Water Is Life straws to children to solve the pure water crisis in Africa is a way to touch and reach out to these children one by one – where do I buy more!    Leah and I said our goodbyes as she told me, she is saved.  I slept with contentment and peace that night in Kisumu.

Amidst aggressive, crafty salesmen is a soft spoken craft vendor selling her wares.  She is a lovely Christian woman.  Tall, charming, young.  Her items were organized, neat and she set a fair price for each.  

She waited for the customers – she did not pursue them.   Among an interesting collection of crafts, Evelyn offered her hand-made, uncomplicated, elegant black bead necklaces with a simple yet dramatic wood cross as the centerpiece.  She sold them for 60 Kenyan schillings which equates to approx. 50 cents each.
