A safe water source is essential to the health of a community, but if water is carried home in a dirty container and children are not taught to wash their hands, disease will continue to be a threat.

The simple act of hand washing can dramatically decrease the spread of life-threatening diseases. WATERisLIFE builds on current community programs to ensure that behavioral changes become modifiers for future generations.

The WATERisLIFE hygiene education program is supplementary to the integrated process that WATERisLIFE presents to each community. We understand that not every community encounters the same challenges and difficulties with their water source, sanitation and community health needs. The WATERisLIFE hygiene education program is an important component of the overall goal to maintain a sustainable water and sanitation solution to transform the health of an entire community.

Community-driven school hygiene education can be truly transformational. Students listen. They watch, imitate and retain the information they are given. They are eager and attentive. They share what they learn with their family members. They are the ambassadors to their family's health.

The WATERisLIFE hygiene program includes an excellent student activity guidebook, translated into local languages, in partnership with Project WET. This student activity guidebook is culturally friendly and features colored illustrations and in-depth information on the following topics: germ awareness, hand washing with soap, and the transportation and consumption of clean water. The guidebook provides a visual aid that adds to the structure of the informational and often highly animated WiL hygiene education program. The WATERisLIFE hygiene education program is meant to be a tool for anyone dedicated to positive behavioral health changes in their community.

Trainers are encouraged to use culturally sensitive judgment to engage participants and empower members of the local community who are eager for change. The goal of the WATERisLIFE hygiene education program is to set a foundation for hygiene education and health awareness that will support total community health change. We measure our success based on positive behavioral changes in hand washing with soap, filtration systems use, and water storing and acquisition within three months of initial training and implementation.

In addition to hygiene education, WATERisLIFE provides community training and start-up materials to support the development and growth of a community soap business. This empowers women and men to engage in a business initiative that will stimulate their economy, as well as provide a consistent supply of soap to community schools for hand washing. The soap business allows communities to create positive lifestyle changes through work, entrepreneurship, studies and community interaction.

WATERisLIFE provides in-country training and materials to help schools, medical clinics, orphanages and villages build community designed and implemented hand-washing stations. Based on resources and facility need, these can be one-unit stations to multi-faucet washing stations.
