A safe water source is essential to the health of a community, but if water is carried home in a dirty container and children aren’t washing their hands, disease continues to be a threat.
The simple act of hand washing dramatically decreases the spread of life-threatening diseases. WATERisLIFE builds on current community programs to ensure that behavioral changes become modifiers for future generations.
Our hygiene education program is always supplementary to the integrated process we present to a community. Every community encounters different challenges and difficulties with their water source, but hygiene education is a necessary backdrop for all.
We especially believe in the transformation of community-driven school hygiene. Students listen. They watch, imitate and retain what they learn. They share what with their family members. They become ambassadors for their family's health.
The WATERisLIFE hygiene program includes an excellent student activity guidebook, translated into local languages, in partnership with Project WET. This student activity guidebook is culturally friendly and features colored illustrations and in-depth information on the following topics: germ awareness, hand washing with soap, and the transportation and consumption of clean water.
End goal: Set a foundation for hygiene education and health awareness that supports total community health change.
WATERisLIFE provides training and start-up materials to instigate community soap businesses. This empowers women and men to engage in a business initiative that stimulates their economy and provides a consistent supply of soap to schools and homes.
WATERisLIFE provides in-country training and materials to help schools, medical clinics, orphanages and villages build community designed and implemented hand-washing stations. Based on resources and facility need, these can be one-unit stations to multi-faucet washing stations.
